STEM Club

STEM Club

We provide substantive opportunities for children and young people to engage with science, technology, engineering and mathematics in ways they would not usually be able to at school or in the home. These activities are co-designed with participants.

Using Artificial General Intelligence to Overcome Barriers to Creative writing

We use artificial general intelligence software to support stduents in bringing their creative writing ideas to life.

This includes imaging how the hero and villian of a story might look, picturing the setting and then linking to different language devices to improve impact of the writing on the intended audience.

Bradford Science Festival

We participated in the Bradford Science Festival 2021. Students produced posters about climate change, sustainability and our environment. We presented this work at the Science and Media Museum in Bradford over the October half term.

Overall, almost 100 children had the opportunity to contribute to the design of the exhibition. Nine children attended the Bradford Science Festival for a day to volunteer as science explainers.

Life, lockdown and Peak Tuition Academy

Our STEM activities in 2021 are focused on exploring the impact of covid-19 and the associated lockdown on the lives of young people.

We are with local people to co-design this project and young people were involved in every aspect of the delivery, from planning and  storyboarding to the actual filming and editing. We ran focus groups with local young people to evaluate the production at each stage.

The final production, a 30 minute documentary, will be available for public viewing in October 2021.

Oral Hygiene Project

During this third lockdown (January-May 2021) many parents have found it difficult to maintain normal boundaries for their children. It became all too common for children to attend their online classes in their pyjamas, blurry eyed and without washing. So, we are looking at the science of teeth (and brushing them) to kick start 2021.  Children's project work will be judged and four winners chosen to receive an Oral B electric toothbrush.

STEM Engagement Video Pilot
(Summer 2020)

Young people told us how difficult and boring the 2020 lock down was. Many parents shared, with us, concerns about their children's education. So we all worked together to find a solution. We teamed up with the National Science and Media Museum and used our trading income to fund a series of home science education videos, produced by children for children!  This work became available for public viewing as part of the Bradford Science Festival in October 2020.

Robot Challenge 2020

The purpose of this pilot was to have fun whilst helping children understand automation and it's impact on the employment landscape. Through activities like this we are able to explore some big ideas, such as our knowledge based economy and how skills can impact on earnings and employment flexibility.

We conducted youth club style informal workshops where we helped children build the robots. We also provided some support to children and parents building the robots at home.

Penpal Scheme Pilot 2020

Young people tell us how difficult they find it to see past their immediate surroundings. So we teamed up with the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester to pilot a pen pal scheme, which we have funded through our trading activities (tutoring). We gave 21 local children the opportunity to write to one of 13 STEM professionals, recruited from around the UK. The project has been running for 2 weeks and we're delighted to see that quality dialogue helping to raise aspirations amongst the children we serve.
